definition
Rare non-lipaemic disease in which disseminated infiltrates of histiocytic foam cells containing lipid develop in the skin, mucous membranes, meninges, and rarely other organs. Skin lesions consist of widespread, coalescent, red, brown, or yellow papules, nodules and plaques that occur mainly on the face, flexures, and intertriginous areas. Involvement of the mucous membranes and the upper respiratory tract may lead to respiratory difficulties. Meningeal involvement is common, leading to diabetes insipidus when infiltration at the base of the brain is present. Xanthoma disseminatum tends to run a chronic course, lesions have been seen to regress spontaneously.
